Bio:

C.H. Engelhardt is a mixed media artist from Pittsburgh, PA. Their work utilizes processes inspired by 20th-century experimental music, and these processes are applied through several mediums including scanography, cardboard, and found sounds. The outcomes of their work focus on and question how specific artistic processes can be applied across these different mediums in a way that allows the processes themselves to act as a focal point.

Statement:

My process always starts with a question, and this question is formed from actively observing the physicality of the subject matter that I am working with. Though my work is often highly structured, the processes that I use embrace play and uncertainty. My artworks especially thrive on uncertainty during the early stages of their creation where they are allowed to freely change and morph as more questions are continuously formed. Through my art, I am interested in exploring interactions that individuals have with spaces and how individual perceptions of a space can shift and evolve over time. My work often focuses on subject matter inspired by the spaces I am actively involved in, including my college campus and hometown. Visually, many of my pieces focus on how spaces change through the utilization of layered mixed mediums. Along with my visual work, I create site-specific installations that bring attention to the seemingly mundane aspects of spaces and invite participants to appreciate their surroundings in more intimate and unconventional ways. Found sounds are also frequently utilized in my work, and they further showcase the individuality of the spaces they are recorded in.
